In today’s business landscape, it’s not enough to simply provide deliverables to your clients and customers, you really need to do whatever it takes to create a lasting relationship.
With many business owners navigating these past two difficult years, you may find your clients leaning on you not just for the service or product you provide, but for the guidance and friendship you bring. Having a deep and meaningful relationship with your clients is crucial–especially right now.
Here are a few ways you can deepen your client relationships.
1. Get Yourself Into A Better Mental State
You must first start with yourself. Your clients are looking to you right now for help, guidance and support. If you are bringing anxious energy, uncertainty or angst to your relationship, it’ll be a downward spiral.
“In order to create daily positivity, repeat a mantra to yourself in the mirror,” says Sayed Jafari, founder and CEO of PSC Academy. “These mantras aren’t just phrases. They are the beginnings of self-love. Imagine a glass of water. The water represents happiness and success. If you add a drop of black ink, the water will turn gray. This ink represents negative thoughts. Each drop will turn your water darker until it is black. But the same can be said in reverse. Each positive thought can dilute the water and bring it back to a lighter color.”
Even if you don’t feel like it’s working at the moment, over time it will have an impact on you in ways you aren’t yet ready to understand.
2. Relieve Customer Stress And Stay In Touch
One of the biggest stressors in the workplace that often goes silent is that knowing your customer is stressed or frustrated with you makes you want to ignore them further. Don’t do this because it will only steal your energy and happiness too.
Instead, just stay in touch. You never know what your customer is going to say, especially if they know you are there for them – regardless of how angry they may be.
“The first software you should use is Slack because not only is it the most important way to communicate with your team, but it allows you to maintain that same relationship with your customers, which is vital to every relationship,” says Leila Hormozi, co-founder at Gym Launch, who at 27 years old, is credited with building a company valued at over 9-figures.
3. Don’t Hoard Your Knowledge
Knowing when to share your knowledge and resources with your community versus keeping it hush will separate you from your competition. Hoarding your knowledge hoping that you stay on top will only work for so long – so share it with people you trust.
“I came from nothing, and I have worked hard to get where I am today,” says Lazaro Vento, founder of Million Dollar AirBnB. “I want to share my experience and knowledge with other passionate people in this industry, which is what I’ve done with my company. Start with leveraging your connections to create a strong professional network and be generous with what you’ve learned.”
4. Create Social Relationships Through Learning
Find ways to interact with your clients outside of the normal 9 to 5. This helps to solidify your relationships and shows them they are appreciated. For example, do you have the type of relationship with your client that you go to yoga classes together? Maybe coordinate a monthly lunch and learn? Form a book club?
By finding ways to connect with your client outside of the office, you are also strengthening both the personal and professional relationship already in the works. “You can create deep social relationships through classes together,” says Emmie Keefe, the founder and CEO of Healthy Emmie. Keefe, who studied for four years to become a math teacher, launched a YouTube channel, where she shares tips about plant-based eating on the platform. Cultivate an ethos of learning, beyond the work you do together and your relationship will be stronger for it.
